Makeup and makeup remover go hand in hand. How else are you going to wipe off layers of foundation, concealer, and lipstick? If you’ve run out of makeup remover, there are some hacks to get around it. According to Healthline, coconut oil can double as a makeup remover and night cream. The unrefined oil can do away with a full face of cosmetics, help to reduce inflammation, and hydrate skin. Although you can swap it from the kitchen pantry to the medicine cabinet, you’ll want to use organic or unrefined coconut oil on your skin.

If you’re in a pinch, olive oil will work to remove makeup too (via Self). It is not optimal, as your skin will have a greasy feeling afterward. Although olive oil is non-comedogenic so it should not lead to acne. Of course, with different skin types come different outcomes. But forget the cooking oils. There’s another product you can use as a makeup remover that might be a little unconventional.

Shaving cream as a makeup remover

Shaving cream comes to the rescue when that classic red lipstick goes awry. Rebecca Perkins, former television show makeup artist and founder of SheSpoke shared, “Barbasol is a super-concentrated formula that can remove fake blood stains as well as red lipstick transfers” (per Brydie). Perkins worked on set for “Law & Order SVU,” hence the fake blood reference. But even if you’re not staging crime scenes, shaving cream can be the fix you never knew you needed for your Halloween costumes.

Beauty blogger Maria Yaeger tried the shaving cream hack for removing her full face of makeup, according to Cosmopolitan. The cream stripped her face of beauty products, but experts don’t recommend this usage. “The ingredients in this shaving cream have obviously been tested to be used on facial skin, so they may be safe enough” Dermatologist Dr. Dendy Engelman explained. She then warns, “I wouldn’t recommend for continued usage, especially for eye makeup removal.” It’s best to listen to the professionals and keep your current eye makeup remover, but a little shaving cream won’t hurt for stubborn red lipstick and fake blood.

Shaving cream might be a better makeup remover when it comes to clothes. Did your perfect shade of foundation get on your sweater collar again? No need to fear. According to Apartment Therapy, pre-treating makeup stains with shaving cream is an easy way to have your clothes pristine after one wash. This hack works to remove any oil-based products. Simply add a dollop of shaving cream to the stain and let it sit for 10 minutes. When the time is up, wipe off the cream before throwing it in the washing machine.

Kim Kardashian is all for this hack too. For stubborn makeup stains, she suggests “us[ing] a drop of rubbing alcohol mixed with the shaving cream. The stain should lift out easily” (via InStyle). If Kim says it, then it has to be accurate, right? Shaving cream and rubbing alcohol are both inexpensive, everyday ingredients that are probably in your house right now. Don’t let the makeup stains win.
