They made their first video just for fun

When their soon-to-be viral video was first posted, Sophia Grace was only 8 years old and Rosie was only 4. But it wasn’t fame the girls (or their families) were seeking — it was all just for fun. As Sophia Grace told AOL, “Rosie happened to be at my house playing dress-up, so we thought we would just stand there and look cute and sing along and dance.”

In fact, her parents didn’t even want to post the video, but the rest of the family pushed for it. What started out as a couple of views became an eruption of excitement. Sophia Grace continued, “The first time it had seven views, then we looked again the next day and it had like 100 views, and then celebrities started tweeting it, like Puff Daddy and Justin Bieber, and it went crazy.”

At just 8 years old when her first viral video came out, Sophia Grace Brownlee soon found herself having some one-on-one time with Ellen DeGeneres on her show, as well as her idol Nicki Minaj. When later asked during an interview with Build about her interactions with the stars, Sophia Grace shared some wisdom she received from the two women. Given Sophia Grace’s age at the time, the advice she got makes complete sense: She shared that “[Minaj] just said stay in school and stuff … just have fun.”

DeGeneres’ advice was similar; in the spirit of fun, she told the young star, “Don’t take things too seriously,” and “Don’t get too nervous.” As Sophia Grace shared during her interview, this has been important advice for her over the years.

Singing wasn’t always the dream

Although Sophia Grace Brownlee came to fame because of her voice and stage presence, this hasn’t always been the young star’s big dream. Speaking with Bustle, she said, “I’ve always sung. My parents noticed that I had quite a good voice, but when I was younger I didn’t even think about being a singer when I was older.”

And even though she can now see a singing career in her future, she hasn’t given up quite yet on other goals. When asked during an interview with Kidz World what career she would possibly want, she mentioned singing and acting, but also possibly being a doctor one day. Similarly, Rosie told Kidz World that her dreams include acting, dancing, or being a vet or hostess. Luckily, the girls have some time before making those big decisions.

Sophia Grace and Rosie had their own dolls

YouTube

In 2014, Sophie Grace Brownlee and her cousin Rosie McClelland teamed up with Just Play to launch their very own singing dolls. The dolls wore fluffy pink dresses and tiaras — as seen on their viral appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” When a button was pressed, Sophia Grace sang “Super Bass,” the song that first helped the girls go viral. The dolls also came with socks, shoes, a hairbrush, and a microphone.

The dolls were originally sold at Walmart, but are no longer manufactured. If you’re lucky, though, you might be able to find an old set for sale on a secondhand website.

The cousins released two books together

YouTube

While Sophie Grace Brownlee and Rosie McClelland are definitely best known for their “Ellen DeGeneres” TV appearances and viral videos, the pair also released not one but two books: “Tea Time with Sophia Grace and Rosie” and “Show Time with Sophia Grace and Rosie.”

In “Tea Time,” we get the story of the girls planning a tea party. When both girls are told they can invite one guest each, naturally, they choose each other (via Scholastic). In “Show Time,” the two girls get ready to appear in a school talent show. However, things hit a snag when they find out that two other girls from school are also rehearsing the same song (via Scholastic). Both books are illustrated by Shelagh McNicholas.  Just before the release of their second book, the girls got to see the book’s cover for the very first time on Ellen’s show. “Look, we’ve even got our Converse on!” screamed an excited Sophia Grace. Could these two be any cuter?

They both launched singing careers

YouTube

When Sophie Grace Brownlee and Rosie McClelland first sang in that viral video, we can bet that neither of them expected it would lead to an actual job in the music industry. However, since then, both girls have launched solo singing careers.

Since 2017, Sophia Grace has released several singles and EPs. Her song “Girl in the Mirror (feat. Silento)” has 15 million listens on Spotify. She has also released eight music videos to date on her YouTube channel. Sophia Grace has also done quite a few covers of artists like Ariana Grande, Camila Cabello, and Bruno Mars.  Rosie has also launched a solo pop career, and has dropped several music videos on her YouTube channel. On Spotify, she’s dropped eight singles so far. In 2018, Rosie even vlogged her experience as she recorded her first single in Los Angeles when she was just 11 years old.

Sophia Grace offered tips on how to become famous

As a young teen, Sophia Grace Brownlee continued to perform and post to her YouTube channel. When interviewed by Lorraine, she spoke of her fame and shared tips for other young girls who want to be famous.

Her advice is pretty easy to follow. She said, “You just got to be you, really. Be natural and have fun, because people want to see you the way you are and will like you for who you are, not being someone else. So that’s what I try to do.” It’s safe to say she is succeeding in that goal.

They’ve gotten criticism from haters

It’s hard to believe that adorable stars like Sophia Grace Brownlee and Rosie McLelland would receive harsh comments on social media, but Sophia Grace has confirmed that no one is immune. As she shared with Lorraine in 2017, she is able to keep things in perspective and has an idea as to why people might say mean things. “I really think that if the ‘haters’ saw you in real life, they wouldn’t actually say these things to your face. They just feel confident behind their computer screens … Half of the time, I think it’s just people who are bored. So they just decide to comment on this because they’re bored.”

The star showed her maturity during the interview, sharing how she handled the negative comments. “I just try to laugh about it, and I actually find them quite funny sometimes,” she said.

Old Ellen videos embarrass Rosie

Instagram

Watching old videos of being a kid can be a bit embarrassing — especially if those videos have been watched by millions. In October 2017, Rosie took the time to re-watch her appearances on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and posted a video with all of her reactions.

So, how did she respond? Just as many others would. One of her first comments was, “It is still embarrassing.” Throughout the video, she made fun of her voice as a kid, comparing it to a “chipmunk,” and teased herself about some of her answers to celebrity questions.

Sophia Grace doesn’t like watching herself on video

YouTube

Sophia Grace Brownlee’s videos still get a ton of views these days, but she isn’t among the people watching them. In fact, the young star doesn’t like watching any of her own videos. This is especially the case when it comes to her earliest videos. As she said during an interview with Build, “I’m proud of everything I’ve done, but I guess I get embarrassed sometimes. And I like to talk about stuff I’m doing now more.”

Would she want to watch the videos with her friends? That’s a big no. But she doesn’t think she’s alone in giving that response, adding, “I feel like everyone finds it a little bit embarrassing watching stuff from when they were younger.” That’s a safe bet, Sophia Grace.

Rosie has had diverse interests

Instagram

While Rosie McLelland may not have launched a music career like her cousin Sophia Grace, she has kept busy over the years. In 2017, she posted a video to her YouTube channel sharing what she’d been up to. At the time, she had been practicing gymnastics for two years and posted content of her learning new tricks. She was also learning Spanish, and at the time had received her first solo in singing class at school. Oh, and if that’s not enough, she was focused on adding to her musical knowledge. During the video about her schedule, she said, “I took my prep test in piano and I passed! And I’m really excited about that.” You go, girl.

Sophia Grace claimed she was cast on Into the Woods

Back in 2013, rumors spread online that Sophia Grace Brownlee had been cast as Red Riding Hood in the film version of the famous Sondheim musical “Into the Woods.” Her casting was announced by her representatives, but was never confirmed by the studio. Then, when the full cast was announced, Lilla Crawford was announced as the actress (via Entertainment Weekly). Naturally, people were a little confused.

Sophia Grace’s father eventually made a statement on Twitter that read, “After careful consideration, we the parents of Sophia Grace felt that as rehearsals progressed that she was too young for this part. It was a joint decision between us and the director and producer of ‘Into the Woods’ to withdraw Sophia Grace from the film” (via Playbill). It sounds like Sophia Grace really was cast in the role, but perhaps wasn’t ready for such a grown-up part.

Sophia Grace said acting isn’t as easy as it looks

Sophia Grace Brownlee and Rosie McLelland make singing, dancing, and acting look natural and easy. While this may be the case for singing and performing, Sophia Grace has shared that acting has been harder for her to master. When speaking with Movie Mom about her 2014 movie with Rosie, “Sophia Grace & Rosie’s Royal Adventure,” she discussed the day-to-day world of acting and where she has had the most trouble.

She said, “I think the hardest thing wasn’t actually anything to do with the movie, it was just like when we were practicing the lines. It goes over and over again because we have to do the scenes over and over again. The director would say ‘one more time,’ but it would actually be a hundred more times.” But the star was a good sport and enjoyed every moment of it. Sophia Grace went on to say that while it was “quite hard,” that it was also “really fun.”

The girls stopped wearing tutus

Sophia Grace Brownlee and Rosie McLelland created a brand for themselves, as young girls singing the latest hits in their adorable tutus. However, times have changed. As the two girls grew older, one of the biggest changes has been in their wardrobes.

Sophia Grace spoke on this topic with Loose Women (via Cosmopolitan) in 2017, and said, “There’s no more tutu. I think it looks pretty, but I’m 14 in April, so I guess I’m a bit old now.” The world will have to wait to see what her and Rosie’s next big fashion statements will be. Hopefully, it still involves tulle.

The cousins aren’t best friends

Instagram

Not only are Sophia Grace Brownlee and Rosie McLelland not a duo anymore, but they also aren’t besties, either. This has become clear over the years through the content the two have shared on social media.

In January 2015, Sophia Grace posted her music video “Best Friends,” which surprisingly did not include an appearance from Rosie. Then, a couple of years later, Rosie also posted a video during which she shared video notes from her friends, but Sophia Grace wasn’t one of them.  While these girls may not be sharing friendship bracelets, they are family for life. In 2017, Rosie shared a sweet post on Sophia Grace’s birthday, commenting, “Happy birthday to my amazing cousin.”

Sophia Grace and Rosie are no longer an official duo

Instagram

Now, for the most devastating news: Sophia Grace Brownlee and Rosie McLelland are no longer a singing duo. In 2014, Sophia Grace stopped posting videos with her cousin and started to focus on her own endeavors in music, makeup, and fashion. But no worries for fans — the two are still close.

During a 2017 interview on Lorraine, Sophia Grace spoke about her cousin, saying, “She’s great. She’s just doing what every other 11-year-old does.” She also shared that their families were planning to go on holiday together in December of that year.

Sophia Grace had her own clothing line

Instagram

After Sophie Grace Brownlee and Rosie McClelland shot to fame, they came out with loads of merchandise for their fans. One of the biggest business ventures to come from their viral fame was Sophia Grace’s clothing line, LoLoLondon. The line was launched in 2019 when Sophia Grace was just 16 years old. As she said in a statement at the time, “This is one of the most exciting and enjoyable things I’ve ever done. I’ve always loved fashion from when I was a little girl dressing up in tutus and tiaras, and then leaving that behind to make way for my teenage years and changing my wardrobe and style” (via Fuzzable).

She went on to explain that the clothing line would be inspired by her love of smart casual wear and the city of London. “The most amazing part about the design process is interacting with my social media followers. I love reading the comments and DMs to see what color or style is their favorite. One thing I’ve learned is we all like different things and have different opinions on clothing — it’s great that we all have our own style,” she said to the outlet. Given that the brand’s official website is not active, the clothing line appears to have been discontinued.

Sophia Grace focused on body positivity

Instagram

Sophia Grace has used her fame for good, focusing her music on a message of overall body positivity. As a young role model for girls, the star used her lyrics to bring up this important topic. Bustle shared some of the lyrics from one of Sophia Grace’s songs, including lines like, “You’re too short, too fat, too skinny. Hey, well, excuse me if I think that I’m pretty.”

Sophia Grace was excited to give a voice to the topic. In 2016, she told Just Jared Jr., “I’m so excited for you all to hear my new song ‘Girl In The Mirror.’ I hope I can inspire all girls from around the world with my lyrics that proudly explain we should not be concerned with our physical attributes, but to know [it’s] really about what’s inside.”

Rosie was super supportive of Sophia Grace’s pregnancy news

YouTube

In 2022, Sophia Grace Brownlee announced in a YouTube video that she is expecting her first child. “I am here to tell you guys that I am pregnant,” she said. “So, I am 21 weeks today and the reason why I left it so long is because I always want to make sure that everything’s completely fine and that everything’s safe. … I was very shocked when I first found out, [and] I’ve got used to it now and I’m super, super happy about it.”

Even though some fans were skeptical because of Sophia Grace’s young age of 19, her cousin Rosie McClelland could not have been more supportive. “Together forever, words can’t explain this feeling!” Rosie wrote on an Instagram story (via Yahoo!). “So excited for this next chapter, here for you will buy milk, babysit, but I don’t think I can change a nappy just yet love you so much.”  As Sophia Grace told E! News, “She was just so happy because we’ve been so close our whole life and we literally have done everything together. I’m going into a new chapter and obviously, she’s going to be the best cousin ever. I’m so excited for her to meet the baby.”

Sophia Grace and Rosie are no longer an official duo
